Once
upon a time, (in 1980...) , there was little bitty building, with
a little bitty parking lot in the little bitty town of Little Rock.
And, the name of this building at the corner of Rodney Parham &
Shackelford was Shorty Small's.
Named for a colorful character who was as tall as he was wide , many
a diner will tell you that some of the best food in the world passes
through the kitchen windows of Shorty Small's, which dishes up such
dining delectables as: "Jumpin' Off The Bone Tender" Ribs,
Cooked-To-Order Steaks, Chicken Dishes and Golden Fried Catfish. (Shorty
Small claims that he invented the notion of eating with your hands.)
As the years passed, and folks caught on to the great food at Shorty's,
a parking place in the little bitty parking lot became a very valuable
commodity.
In 1990, a gentleman by the name of Paul Kreth, a graduate of Oklahoma
State University, who'd spent a number of years in the restaurant
business decided to buy Shorty Small's. Kreth was a little partial
to the establishment since it was located in the his hometown of Little
Rock.
The concept, which includes a fun, comfortable atmosphere enhanced
with antiques and a whimsical charm has spread to six locations including:
West Little Rock & North Little Rock, Arkansas, three locations
in Oklahoma and a 15, 000 square foot property in the beautiful Branson,
Missouri Ozarks.
Food portions are huge, and guests are encouraged to bring their appetites.
Shorty still boasts the world's largest chicken fried steak, the original
onion loaf, and famous handmade cheese sticks. And, of course, the
ribs are as tender as the girl next door, as are the steaks that are
juicy and delicious.
Private rooms are available for up to 60 people. And, off-premise
catering starts from just $4.99 per person; Shorty can cater to up
to 2500 of your closest friends...
A quality food product delivered in a clean, comfortable atmosphere
by the best service the industry can offer is what has kept Shorty
Small's successful through the years. To day Shorty Small's employs
over 500 people, and plans five more restaurants during the next eight
years.
